Day 1 and filled with excitement !

Well to say I’m disappointed is an understatement. I’m downright disgusted! In tournament fishing the highs are high and the lows are low. I’m at one of the lowest points in my fishing career after our dismal finish in Sturgeon Bay . Our prefishing for the tournament went fairly well . We caught fish trolling crankbaits , trolling spinner rigs and casting jigs and glide baits . All presentations were producing quality fish and we averaged about 25 - 30 lbs per day . We knew that 25 lbs. per day would put us in check cashing range . We went with our most consistant pattern of trolling crankbaits south of the launch "in the mud" . Those fish are roaming fish feeding on schools of baitfish . They will move everyday so sometimes it takes a bit to relocate them . Well we never could relocate the schools and ended up with 2 fish per day for a dismal 75th place out of 82 . Worst showing for me in about the last 10 years . Tough to get over that one but you just have to pick up the pieces and learn from your mistakes or bad decisions . I said I would show you guys the good and bad . This is one of the REAL bad points in my career . I will overcome this outcome but it just is a very disappointing and low feeling that is not enjoyable to deal with . Leech lake is coming up and we are going to the championship on Lake Winnebago in October . Hopefully I can finish the year on a better note . Thank you all for your support ! Not only will competition be great, but Ranger Boats will be hauling up one of only TWO brand new Ranger 622FS Pros with a 400hp Mercury Marine outboard to display to anglers and the public throughout the event weekend. The best medicine!

So I am once again delighted that we are off to the best start of a year to date at Structure-Fishing with Mark O’Neill! We expanded the Lowrance University program this year by adding a few more locations and the interest in the Lowrance On the Water Training sessions continues to grow as more are made aware that the program exists.

LOOKS AWESOME !

The new Lowrance trolling motor is said to have the most thrust and longest running trolling times of any motor on the market. Here's a first look at it.

Not quite the finish we were hoping for . We worked very hard all week to try to learn what the fish were doing and put a pattern together . Water temps were very cold in the main river channel. Mid 40’s and climbing . If you ran south and went up in the shallow bays you could find mid to upper 50’s . We targeted those areas with spinners and cranks trying to see what the fish preferred. Cranks seemed to get more pike than walleye . We found the walleyes seemed to be hanging in the dirtiest water which was warmer . They were in shallow but near steep breaks leading to deeper water . We located 4 or 5 good shallow dirty water flats and caught good 23 - 27 inch fish off each one . Felt pretty confident we could pull 18 - 22 lbs. a day . Day one we ran 50 miles to our spot and set up. First pass we had 3 hits but they were short striking the baits . Started pinching the tails off the crawlers and hooked up right away with a 3.5 lb walleye . Next pass had 2 more short strikes . We moved to our 2nd spot and the dirty water had been blown out. Water was 5 degrees colder . On to our 3rd spot. Caught 4 pike off that . TOUGH DAY ! Ended the day with just that one fish . The other team we were working with ended up in 14 th place after day one so we decided to not make the run and let them fish alone on those spots . We had found some fish up a feeder river earlier in the week . They weren’t quite as big but we figured we could pull 15 lbs. We switched to cranks and pulled up river and got 2 walleyes on our first pass . That was all it was going to be for us though . Caught 4 more pike and a smallmouth for the day . We ended up placing a dismal 122 nd out of 178 . We learned alot and had a great time . Next tournament is Green Bay in August. We’ll be doing a lot of preparing for that one . ... See more
